Jon's Pome

Jon's pome was written by my uncle and best man, Jon Atack.
Jon was also kind enough to read his pome out during the wedding ceremony.

dull sinews are recharged
the grey ghost of hope
again is pink with flesh
words regain meaning
and the raft of betrayed promises
is sluiced away
by this new tide
the fetid waters of dismay
dissolve
on this new tide

for so many years
you were a glimmering
pinprick of light
so feint as to be
indiscernable to all
but the eye of last hope -
the too often sleeping eye
of last ever hope -
and now you
are a calming hearth
of warmth and welcome

or a new tide
flooding away
centuries of stagnation
healing waters
that wash away
the cruelties of the past

dull sinews are recharged
hope’s grey ghost grown pink
with flesh
words have sense again
and betrayal slips away
on this new morning tide

for a lifetime
you were a dream
beyond the edge
of comprehension
something half known
never entertained
an invisible beacon
alluring
beyond the senses

this new tide
releasing
the harsh treachery
of inconsolable folly
this ship at last
in haven

I lived incomplete
a part cell
assured of incompletion
eternal
until by miracle
we joined

I could not be single
sole
have the strength
but never the temperament
love to love
to be loved
to share in specialness
cherish the treasure
of love
was not whole
until this forever now
