This is how I felt on 20 March 2003, when I learned that Britain and America had declared war upon Iraq...

A little peace of mine

Despite the efforts of millions, the slaughter has begun. The Third Reich of our times is waging war against a population of whom almost half are children under the age of 14. My MP voted against this terrorism. My party voted unanimously for peace. The Iraqi citizens are not alone in having a leader who refuses to listen to the will of the people.

Following the Second World War, Nazi war criminals stood trial for slaughtering civilians in "an unprovoked invasion of a sovereign state that offers no threat to one's homeland." What will be the fate of the current war criminals, Bush and Blair? Maybe they should be forced to face the result of their actions, to witness how after a US bombing raid, "The children's skin had folded back, like parchment, revealing veins and burnt flesh that seeped blood, while the eyes, intact, stared straight ahead. A small leg had been so contorted by the blast that the foot seemed to be growing from a shoulder" (Pilger).

My hopes for world peace are very simple and are hopes already expressed by Bush: install a democratically elected leader; destroy weapons of mass destruction held by a country that is very likely to use such weapons against a civilian population; and hold leaders accountable for acts of terrorism that are committed at their behest. Accordingly, I want the UN to remove the currently unelected leader of the US and oversee the replacement of Bush with a democratically elected leader; I want UN inspectors to oversee the destruction of all "weapons of mass destruction" at Bush's disposal (weapons such as those he is currently using against civilians in Iraq, just as many US leaders before him have used similar "weapons of mass destruction" against civilian populations around the world); and I want the UN to hold Bush accountable for the terrorist atrocities he is currently committing against Iraqi civilians.

You may say I'm a dreamer but I am not the only one...
